How a looper works ?

This is a nice example of how to use one.

There is not much to it: get one, get a good microphone, plug the microphone into the looper, start playing, stomp onto it to start recording, stomp onto it to stop recording, start again and repeat. Using a headphone can help since you can set the tempo of a song beforehand and hear a click to help you stomping in time.

Plus advanced models allow you to record and switch to different parts, as shown in your video where the artist switches from A part to B part. And obviously this works well with minimalist, repetitive and modal music.

« Boss » manufacturer's samplers are well known and valued. If I'm not mistaken, it's what the artist uses in the video you linked. Often times those machines provide a basic collection of drum beats to get you started, but you can record your own percussion as demonstrated here.

I've never much used this type of gear but have seen it from time to time.

I believe every song writer should own one. My favorite looper is the Boss RC300, very easy to use. Plenty demos and how to videos on YouTube.

The headphones are also necessary so he can hear what he has recorded already without it feeding back as he records new layers.

this is great!

Another option, which I use quite alot, is ableton live.

Ableton is a computer program that focuses on the live performance of electronic music, the session mode is a giant multichannel looper.

The biggest advantage is being able to have loops in different time signatures and to be able to reverse and freely trigger any loop to play at any time.

It makes sense Travis.
So, no need to spend 500+ for a looper?

E.g. I see here https://www.athensproaudio.gr/el/focusrite-scarlett-2i2-studio-2nd.html
that included  ProTools First, Ableton Live Lite, 2GB Loopmasters sample content, Focusrite RED plug-in suite.

do you mean this one?

That is a sound card, and not a bad one at that, which you need in order to plug a microphone into a computer and get a decent sound. Looks like a good starting pack, although I don't know about the microphone and the headset.

The bundled ProTools and Ableton Live versions are a bonus, not the complete softwares, but I guess as an initiation tool it should do it. If you find you like the workflow, you can invest in a full version after the fact.

Yeah I sell this pack at my shop. For the price, it's incredible. The mic and the headphones aren't amazing but they are more than sufficient for home use and videos like this one in this thread.

Everything you get in the pack enables you to start working immediately using ableton as a looper. but you will have some learning to do with ableton

download ableton and use that, it's the best software looper around.

As far as free, you won't anything of great quality for free in the looper world unfortunately.

And you'll have to learn a little bit about ableton before being proficient enough to perform using it's looping functions.
