Another reason I love Niko Filippidi is his love for the authentic, real, traditional styles of our Hellenic folk music and the great klarino
masters of the past. He often plays songs and parts of songs that are exactly like great past klaritzides.
For example, when I was playing laouto for him on October 13, he started playing the classic “O Ilios” Tsamikos, but almost immediately I realized he was turning the song to Nikos
Karakostas’s famous version, where he changes the C major fingering melody to melodies in the C minor fingering! What a treat!
Well, here in a live performance, Nikos
Filippidis plays another classic Tsamikos, the “Palia Itia,” but in the style of the famous Nikos
Rellias from Goura in Peloponnisos.
