Hi Richard, thanks for posting this.

I had heard about the book a while ago, but forgot about it. It was published as part of last years Istanbul Year of Culture. I'll try and get a copy, post any thoughts and upload it if I can.

In the meantime here's a clip of the author playing tanbur:

Thanks again

Yes, I saw an advance copy of it that a friend obtained- it's got a lot of great stuff in it, especially little details about what differentiates one makam from another... plus two cds of murat playing examples on tanbur- he's an excellent player! I think the book's officially due out sometime this spring.

I've just ordered the book from Bosphorus books in Turkey. It'll take a couple of weeks before I get it, then I'll post my thoughts.

Simon, that is a different book, by Karl L. Signell, that Nikos posted:

nikos- it was a wonderful seminar in houdetsi (makam in improvisation, with sokratis sinopoulos and derya turkan)- i see that sokratis is teaching it again there this spring. highly recommended. we focused on rast and a number of common modulations that rast tends to go to- looked at pesrevs, oyun havasi. and it inspired me to try playing kemence, which is why i haven't been online much these days.... ; )

btw, murat's new book (that richard is posting about) is in english too- and is a more user-friendly makam guide than the signell book (which does have a whole wealth of info too, but isn't organized by makam like murat's new book is).

Alyhoo, thank you for the reminder buddy.  I knew something along the same line was but I forgot who posted it.  Thank you once again, unfortunately I can't access the one Nikos posted due to the access limitation.

Hi Simon,

I understand and share your frustration with accessing files, but the rules are there for a good reason. We've just got to be patient; I'm finding a lot to learn from just the posts and the real work is getting my fingers to do I want them to do when I'm playing; I guess that's the real point of learning, not just reading theory.

If you really get impatient, you can buy a digital copy of the book from:

http://www.lulu.com/browse/search.php?fListingClass=0&fSearch=makam

It's £6.59, which I think is about 4 bucks.

Good luck,

Aly

Mary, I'm happy you enjoy the seminar. I've played some concerts with Derya and his mastership is really high. It was big experience for me to play with such a big master. Houdetsi is a village with great soul. I'm very happy you managed to visit it.
