How to buy a good handmade Politiki Lyra / Kemençe
« on: April 29, 2012, 03:48:20 PM »
Hello All,

I am interested in buying a Kemençe for my niece who is studying traditional Turkish music instruments. My niece lives in Athens where I will be visiting them from the States after a brief stop in Istanbul. So my question: is it worthwhile buying a Kemençe in Istanbul? How much should I expect paying for a good hand made Kemençe? And last but not least, I will have very limited time in Instabul where would i be able to find a good shop? My tour is already planned to stop by Grand Bazaar, can I expect to find something there?

Thanks much

There are makers in Athens who make the politiki lyra. I have not bought one yet, but Spyro I am sure can recommend something.
Good luck!

Hi Thanos,

There are many options, but you should not get one from the Grand Bazaar. Any instruments from there are junk and better suited to hang on a restaurant wall for decoration.

You can buy a good instrument in Turkey from makers such as Fikret Karakaya, Şeyda Hacızade, or Reşat Uca. Not sure what they're charging these days, but expect to pay at least $500 for a good kemençe.

There are also some reasonably good makers in Greece, but in the past they have been more expensive. Tasos Theodorakis, Demetris Rapakousios, and Pavlos Erevnidis are a few people you should contact.

What does your niece play now? Does she have experience with bowed instruments?

I did spend all the morning at Şeyda Hacızade workshop looking at some beautiful instruments...both the quality of the work and the sound are excellent, I wish the clarinet festival was not canceled so I would not have to came again to Edirne in two weeks, that will allow me the buy one of Seyda's Kemences.
